Library CLOSES due to fire
Such a sad day for Mexia... STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE MEXIA CITY MANAGER SUBJECT: FIRE AT GIBBS MEMORIAL LIBRARY Honorable Mayor, County Judge, Councilmembers, and Commissioner, It is with regret and a deep sense of loss that I inform you of a major structural fire at the Gibbs Memorial Library (305 East Rusk Street, Mexia, TX) during the early morning hours of September 28, 2019. At 4:15 a.m. on September 28, 2019 a call was received at Mexia Police Dispatch from a neighbor adjacent to the library complex. The Reporting Party stated seeing smoke and flame coming from the east end of the Library. Firefighting and Rescue units from Mexia, Wortham, and Teague initially responded to the blaze and began concerted efforts to extinguish the fire. Despite the valiant efforts of these professionals, most of the eastern half of the Library was consumed by fire. Fortunately, most of the western end of the Library only received minimal damage from smoke and residual soot. Many of our community members may inquire about the historical records contained in the Historical Room of the Library. Thanks to extraordinary efforts of our firefighters, from multiple communities, some of these documents were saved and have been secured. A full inventory of these items will take several weeks. I humbly ask that you keep our Library Director, ShienDee Pullman, and all of the dedicated Library staff, in your thoughts and prayers. These folks put their heart and soul into Gibbs Memorial Library every day, and this event has affected them deeply. The Gibbs Memorial Library will be closed until further notice. Sincerely, Eric B. Garretty City Manager - City of Mexia, TX
